As a
public service, we would like to show how our medical students
implement our Smoking Prevention Community Program in one or two 60
minute sessions at middle schools and high schools in the hope that
you will be interested in trying all or parts of it out. The
Sessions are focused around an Award Winning Video "They're
Rich, You're Dead" which can be previewed on our web-site
and obtained as a video-cassette or DVD at non-profit copying cost
by calling our fulfillment company at 305-856-1245 or
1-800-833-1245. (See below)
Session 1 Health Aspects (60 minutes)
1. The medical students first present a 10 minute Video on
Testimonies from Teenage Smokers on how smoking has already affected
their lives. To preview this Video, visit the Main Menu of our
web-site http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Tobacco/main
and click Video 5.
After the Video, they state " The teenagers that you just
saw already had serious problems from their smoking. They
already had problems with severe nicotine addiction, dating,
physical fitness, athletic ability and their health and they are all
heading directly toward one or more of the diseases that you are
about to see in the next Video which is a Science Video.
2. Our 24 minute, award
winning Science Video is then shown. This Video presents each of the
Surgeon Generals warnings (i.e. mouth, throat and lung cancers,
emphysema, chronic bronchitis, coronary heart
disease, complications in pregnancy, cosmetic consequences and
consequences in youths) as medically illustrated patient histories
followed by simple explanations of how smoking caused their diseases
(i.e. pathogenesis). To preview this Video, visit the Main Menu of
our web-site
http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Tobacco/main and
click Video 2 (also available in Spanish, Video 2a and
Chinese, Video 2b)
3. A one page audience Hand-out is then reviewed
summarizing the Take Home Message for Session 1 and providing
Home-Work for Session 2. See Medical Student Orientation URL
http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Tobacco/PITCHENIK-TOBACCO_AWARENESS.pdf
(page 7)
4. The remainder of the period is then spent on interactive
questions and answers generated by the audience.
Session 2 Social Aspects (60 minutes)
1. A 30 minute Video is
shown on how tobacco companies sell their products (their lures and
their hook), the consequences of second hand smoke and how and why
to say "NO" to tobacco. This Video is presented in youth oriented
venues including raw testimonies from teenagers, vividly graphic
Techno and interactive RAP Karaoke Music Videos and Kids of the
World providing examples on how and why to say "NO" to a smoke.
To preview parts of this Video visit the Main Menu of our web-site
http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Tobacco/main and click on
Videos 6-9.
2. The remainder of the period is spent addressing the interactive
class exercises in their Homework (assigned in Session 1) in
which tobacco refusal skills are practiced, the above Social
topics discussed and questions answered.
To prepare for the
question and answer periods and class interaction, the medical
students review our Video Study Plan which contains Answers to the
most common Questions posed by young audiences after they see our
Videos (pages 9-35), a Glossary of medical terms (pages 51-55) and
an annotated True False Test on the addictive, health and social
aspects of teen smoking (pages 66-71). To view this resource, visit
the Main Menu of our web-site
http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Tobacco/main and
click on Video Study Plan.
I believe that any interested person (especially health care workers
and students) can conduct this Community Project targeting youths
and in so doing gain experience in preventive medicine and save
lives.
To obtain visually high quality copies of the
above "They're Rich, You're Dead" Videos on one Videocassette
and/or DVD at a very low copying cost (i.e. the same price that we
pay for copying our Video) call our fulfillment company at
305-856-1245 or 1-800-833-1245. Permission is granted to make
any number of additional copies provided they are used for
non-profit public service, copied intact and not edited.
